Psalm 65
A Psalm of David
Celebrating the Wonders of God
In Psalm 65,
David highlights
the
Wonders of God.
Below
is my
Prayer
about the wonders of God.
Lord of Heaven and earth,
Marvelous is your creation.
Miraculous are your deeds.
Magnificent are your names.
Meaningful, mighty, and moving are your words.
And
Matchless is your position in my heart.
Amen

To You belongs silence
[the submissive wonder of reverence],
and
[it bursts into]
praise in Zion, O God;
And to You the vow shall be performed.
The wonder of our God
brings us to a place of
silence
where we are overwhelmed
by the greatness
of our God.
Then
our silence bursts forth in praise.
Verse 1 talks about
Praise in Zion
Where is Zion?
On a map, Zion is Jerusalem.
For example, Isaiah 52:1.
Mount
Zion
is a hill in Jerusalem.
For example, Psalm 125:1.
Zion also refers to heaven.
For example, Hebrews 12:22.
Verse 1 ends with:
And to You the vow shall be performed.
Multiple times in the psalms,
David reiterates
that he has made vows to God and he shall honor them.
In Psalm 61:8 David says,
"So I will sing praise to Your name forever.
Paying my vows day by day."
It appears that one of David's vows
IS
to praise God each day.
O You who hear prayer,
To You all mankind comes.
David is praising
the wonder of
serving the Almighty God
who can hear each prayer -
even a silent prayer
of every person.
God can hear the thoughts and prayers
of every person
at the same time.
THAT is Amazing!
Wickedness and guilt prevail against me;
Yet as for our transgressions,
You forgive them [removing them from Your sight].
David is praising the wonders of
having God
forgive his sins.
Blessed is the one whom You choose and bring near
To dwell in Your courts.
We will be filled with the goodness of Your house,
Your holy temple.
David is praising the wonders of our God
who chooses us as his own
and who
woos us to come close to him and walk with him each day.
Note:
We know that not everyone accepts God's invitation.
Salvation is like
the ancient Jewish marriage tradition.
I will
explain below...
A young man falls in love with a woman.
He comes to her house to
"propose marriage."
He brings
wine with him.
He pours a cup of wine in front of the woman.
If she drinks the wine,
they are engaged to be married.
The young man = God.
God loves us as strongly as any person ever could.
God wants to "marry us" so to speak.
Jesus is even called
"The Bridegroom."
God seeks to draw us into a relationship with him.
Yet,
just like the ancient Jewish man,
God must
ASK
the woman for her hand in marriage.
The woman can
accept or reject
the marriage invitation.
We can accept or reject
Jesus as Savior and Lord.
Verse 4 says:
We will be filled with the goodness of Your house,
Your holy temple.
The English Standard Version Bible
translates this section of verse 4 this way:
We shall be
satisfied
with the goodness of your house,
the holiness of your temple!
I really like the word "satisfied." We all long for our souls to be "satisfied."
I have written on this topic in Psalm 17.
I hope you will visit check that page out.
Paul Wilbur
sings a beautiful song that says,
"I will be satisfied in the richness of you."
By awesome and wondrous things
You answer us in righteousness,
O God of our salvation,
You who are the trust and hope
of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest sea.
David is praising the wonders of our God who knows everything and who always answers us with righteousness.
If we have a decision, God always counsels us to choose the righteous choice.
You who are the trust and hope
of all the ends of the earth
and of the farthest sea.
David reminds us that God is over all the earth.
He is God to everyone.
Oh, how I pray that
everyone would receive him as their God.
Who creates the mountains by His strength,
Being clothed with power,
David is praising our God who is
Creator of all the earth.
David is praising
the Mighty Strength
and Power of God.
Who stills the roaring of the seas,
The roaring of their waves,
And the tumult of the peoples,
David is praising our God
who has Power OVER his Creation.
God can calm the seas.
We read about Jesus doing just that.
And...
Our God can even calm the human heart.
So they who dwell at the ends of the earth
stand in awe of
Your signs
[the evidence of Your presence].
You make the dawn and the sunset shout for joy.
David is praising the wonders of our God
who shows forth
his glory each day
to all the earth.
Every dawn and every sunset gives glory to God.
Prayer for
Celebrating
The Wonders of God.
Dear Lord,
I praise you for you are an Amazing Artist.
You are the Master Painter of our World.
From your palette, you brushed the world with splashes of forest green, sky blue, and sunny yellow.
You created lush jungles of jade and arid deserts of gold.
You formed majestic mountains, and then you took scoops of brilliant white snow and topped their peaks.
You shaped multi-layered canyons and adorned them with copper-colored hues.
Your exquisite creation is vibrant and full of variety.
Joy and thankfulness rise in me as I meditate on the beauty of your world.
Amen

In previous verses,
David praised God
for being
The Creator of all things.
In verses 9 - 12,
David is praising the wonders of our God
who is the
Sustainer of all Creation.
By God's hand,
all things grow and prosper.
You visit the earth and make it overflow [with water];
You greatly enrich it;
The stream of God is full of water;
You provide their grain,
when You have prepared the earth.
10 You water its furrows abundantly,
You smooth its ridges;
You soften it with showers,
You bless its growth.
11 You crown the year with Your bounty,
And Your paths overflow.
12 The pastures of the wilderness drip [with dew],
And the hills are encircled with joy.
In these verses,
David is praising our God who made
this
miraculous liquid
we call
WATER.
Several times in the last few years,
I have spent some quality time
pondering water.
Water is one of the most amazing things on the earth.
It is foundational; our bodies are mostly water.
Moreover,
Water nourishes.
Water cleanses.
Through God, water sustains life.
And water creates Joy.
As we read in the next verse,
water is used to create abundance.
The meadows are clothed with flocks
And the valleys are covered with grain;
They shout for joy and they sing.
David is praising the wonders of our God
who made the world
a place of abundance.
The Bible writes
here and in other verses,
that creation itself
expresses JOY to God.
Psalm 96:12 KJV
"Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein:
then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice.
As David is thinking these awe-inspiring thoughts,
he feels joyful.
