"Save me from this"
is often
our
heart cry.
This page will explore
that heart cry
and the backdrop will be:
Psalm 61
A Psalm of David
Psalm 61
Guides us
toward the goal of
Getting Help from God.
A song of Psalm 61:1-4
Hear my cry, O God
1 Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer.
2 From the end of the earth
will I cry unto thee,
when my heart is overwhelmed:
lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
In these verses we feel the intensity of the depths of life's problems.
David was obviously feeling that intensity when he wrote down this psalm.
These verses were penned to minister to those who are struggling.
Anyone who has followed God for any length of time has been in this place of overwhelm-ed-ness.
In the Night
Many times we experience this in the deep darkness of midnight or later.
The darkness of the night adds to our midnight moaning.
We feel the loneliness as we look out our window and picture others contentedly sleeping.
The quietness of the night and the silence of God can be deafening.
In the Light
Sometimes the attack comes in the daytime.
Woe unto us if this feeling attacks us and tears at us during our work day.
Sometimes it creeps up on us as we observe it coming.
At other times, it pounces on us without warning.
No matter what,
No matter when,
No matter where -
children of the Living God
cry out,
"HELP!!!!!!!!!!"
So as I read these verses
I too can cry out with the emotions of David.
Praying the Scriptures
Lord God,
My heart is overwhelmed!
Help me.
Come to my assistance.
Come to my aid.
I need you, right now!
Rescue me.
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
Amen!

An Encouraging Song
that says:
Lead me to the Rock.
For who is God except our Lord?
Who but he is as a rock?
Psalm 18:31
Dear Lord,
Fill me with your strength.
Guide my emotions upward.
Show me the right path.
In Jesus' name I pray,
Amen

3 For thou hast been a shelter for me,
and a
strong tower from the enemy.
In this verse,
God wants to remind us of
Who he is.
He is not just someone.
He is the KING of KINGS and LORD of LORDS.
He is more POWERFUL than anything on earth or in the heavenlies.
Our God knows
what we are going through.
He is protecting us.
With God on our side, whom shall we fear?
Verse 3 inspires us to say out-loud:
God is my Shelter.
God is my Strong Tower.
God is my PROTECTOR.
Speaking out-loud
brings strength
into
our mind, our emotions, and our will.
This is true especially
when we are speaking Scripture.
We cannot expect to speak
one time
and get lots of results.
We have to be dedicated
to speak out God's word
often
if we want to see awesome results
in us and in our circumstances.
God wants us
to pull up memories
of times when God has helped and protected us.
~
God wants us
to gain strength
from remembering who he is and what he has done.
Lord God,
You come to bring me strength.
You come to bring me courage.
You wipe away my tears.
I will follow you.
Amen

4 I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever:
I will trust in the covert of thy wings.
Selah.
In the first part of this verse,
God wants us to focus on "abiding" with him.
I will Abide.
David promises to "abide" with God forever.
To abide is to stay close to God.
David is reminding God of his commitment to live for Him.
David is saying,
"I'm not just going to seek your hand of help,
I am going to daily seek your face."
David is telling God that he is going to maintain a deep relationship with Him.
I will trust in the covert of thy wings.
Covert could be translated as
Hiding Place
-
We have a hiding place under his wings.
TRUST
Part of
spiritual growth
is growing in our
trust for God.
I encourage you to read
the next sentences and
EMPHASIZE the RED words.
I will trust God.
I WILL trust God.
I will TRUST God.
I will trust GOD.
Selah
means
Pause and think about that.
5 For thou, O God, hast heard my vows: thou hast given me the heritage of those that fear thy name.
The vows that David is talking about are vows
to respect and serve God.
David gave his life to God.
David was a man after God's own heart.
Acts 13:22
Not every promise in the Bible is for everyone.
Those who abide in Jesus, seek his face, seek to obey him - they have a great heritage. It is a heritage of those that fear his name.
Fear of the Lord
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
Psalm 111:10a
We have lost the understanding of the Fear of the Lord. People today too often treat God as their servant.
I heard a quote once that said:
Everyone wants to serve God,
but most only in an advisory capacity.
Unknown author
Those who receive the heritage of God
are those
who
truly love him and respect him.
They treat him as a beloved Father
AND
they also treat him as they should treat
The
King of the World.
6 Thou wilt prolong the king's life: and his years as many generations.
Here, David is speaking of himself.
David is the king.
David is referring to himself.
~ ~
This verse is a favorite of mine in The Living Bible.
Here is the way The Living Bible presents it:
"You will give me added years of life, as rich and full as those of many generations, all packed into one.
And I shall live before the Lord forever."
Psalm 61:6-7a TLB
7 He shall abide before God for ever: O prepare mercy and truth, which may preserve him.
Here David is referring to himself just as he did in the previous verse.
David is promising God to abide with HIM and before HIM forever.
David is also asking for God's MERCY and TRUTH to minister to him. |
God's
Mercy and Truth
protect us and provide for us.
"All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth
unto such as keep his covenant
and his testimonies."
Psalm 25:10 KJV
"But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion,
and gracious, longsuffering,
and plenteous in mercy and truth."
Psalm 86:15 KJV
Mercy and Truth Prayer
God of my Salvation,
Soak me in your mercy.
Open my eyes to your truth.
Keep me close to you.
Amen

8 So will I sing praise unto thy name for ever, that I may daily perform my vows.
David has obviously vowed
to the Lord to do certain things daily.
~ ~ ~
One of them must have been singing to God.
God loves us to sing to Him.
And God knows that we NEED to sing to Him. He made us in such a way that we need to sing to Him.
There are many things that singing to God does for us.
One noteworthy one:
Singing to God will normally uplift our emotions.
Sooooo, he encourages us to sing to Him.
So how about listening to the music below
or
Getting out a CD
or
turn on Christian radio
and SING!
When I call on Jesus....
